Archaeological Survey of India(ASI), Chennai Circle

Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India was established in the year 1861. It is the premier institution in India concentrating on archaeological researches, explorations, excavations and protection and preservation of monuments and sites of national importance.

The functions of ASI are as per the provisions of [1] Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, [2] Rules, 1959 and [3] Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010.

The ASI regulates the export trade of non-antiquities through the provisions of [1] Antiquities and Art Treasure Act, 1972 and [2] Rules, 1973.

Chennai Circle, formerly called Southern Circle covering the whole area of the then Madras Presidency was established in the year 1881.

The national monuments under the jurisdiction of Chennai Circle in the State of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry belong to the dynasties of Cholas, Pandyas, Pallavas, Mutharayars, Nayakas, Arcot Nawabs, British, Dutch etc.

Archaeological Survey of India(ASI), TamilNadu Circle

The State Department of Archaeology was started in the year 1961 with the objectives of (a) conservation and preservation of ancient monuments in Tamil Nadu, and (b) to conduct excavations at historical sites.

Subsequently, its activities were expanded to include Epigraphy (copying and deciphering of stone inscriptions, printing and publishing them in book form), setting up of site museums, chemical preservation of art objects, registration of antiquities etc.

The main aim of the department is to showcase the rich heritage and glorious traditions of Tamil Nadu with its classical Tamil languague, magnificent monuments, exquisite temples, art and sculpture and diversified traditions.

This is essentially a research department to disseminate knowledge about  ancient cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu through a combination of fieldwork, analysis and publication.

The Department has 8 Field Offices, 14 site museums, a library at Head Office, the Government Oriental Manuscripts Library and Research Centre at Chepauk, Chemical Laboratories at Chennai and Madurai, Photography and videography section, Printing section, besides the Institute of Epigraphy which operates from the Head Office.
